Generation Y at Work
Young Workforce
Generation Y outnumbers the Baby Boomers. We have been talking about our aging workforce for two decades. The population growth of Gen Y makes having a vital young labor market more of a reality. Combined with Gen X’s, the younger generations, can help us embrace the rapid-fire changes that our society is going through.
I am also seeing Y generation as being a force behind some very positive changes. Gen Y initiatives seem to have brought about an expansion of the influence of the individual.
Changes in the MarketplaceThe alterations have been seen in the marketplace with cutting-edge technology, heightened environmental concerns, and social networks. These changes have evolved without calamity- but with a dynamic thrust, and they are altering the way we do business.
Telecommuting and You
My friend’s neighbor was ordered by his employer IBM to telecommute. Most employees would have been ecstatic if their management had mandated that kind of change in their work routine. This man hated it.
Work InterruptionsHe was someone, who craved uninterrupted silence when he was working. He had small children. He wasn’t in charge of supervising them, but he found their comings and goings very distracting. He had two school age boys. When school let out and summer vacations came, his work suffered tremendously.
Family RelationshipsHe constantly felt guilty because even though he was home, his primary purpose was to work. His children didn’t understand that he wasn’t available to spend time with them. There would not have been this confusion if his office was at his corporation.
Put in More HoursHe discovered also that he put in more hours being at home. There was no delineation between work and leisure time as there is when you are in an office. He had to force himself to take off weekends because his work was always with him-never safely put away in a desk at his company headquarters.
Office EnvironmentEven though he had always despised office politics, he missed the camaraderie of work. He liked the discipline of rising very early each day, dressing professionally, and facing the world. Being home, he found that he wore more casual clothes. These sporty outfits seem to undermine the seriousness of his purpose.
Team PlayerFinally, he was a team player. He relished those moments when he and could sit with his colleagues and hammer out the details of a project. He felt his input was valued.
Choose Best CandidateHe’s still telecommuting, and he has gradually adjusted to it. Frankly, he wasn’t the ideal candidate for this type of work structure. He was better suited for an office environment. Many crave a telecommuting position.

What is your protection
against cybercriminals?
- When we are seeking new customers, we expand our use of the Internet. We buy merchandise, new technolog, holiday giftts f or clients or renew professional memberships in business groups.
- 48% of people use very few passwords for multiple online accounts. 33% use more passwords, but still some of these passwords are repeated. 19% of the population uses a unique password for each account.
Make a list of your online accounts, and the password you use for each.
- Don’t forget to include professional memberships, which you will probably be renewing. Likewise, include any vendors that you may have used to buy merchandise and networking groups. The more complete your list is, the more you can protect yourself.
Lock out cyberspace criminals!
- Write down the passwords you currently use. Note where your passwords are repeatedly used for multiple accounts. Ideally, you should have a different password for each account. Remember your password guards your employment history, finances, identity and possibly your credit rating.
Creating strong passwords takes time and effort.
- Create a list of new passwords. Passwords should be between eight to fifteen characters. The characters can be letters, numbers or symbols like a question mark. Evaluate the new passwords. The less they have to do with your personal life, such as birthdates, the stronger the passwords.
